Upholding Educational Equity: The School of Education Remains Steadfast Amid Change

In a time of shifting educational policies and executive orders, the 玉米视频 University School of Education (SOE) continues its unwavering commitment to breaking down barriers and providing equitable education for all students.

Founded on principles that challenge colonialism, racism, elitism, and xenophobia, SOE demonstrates resilience and innovation as it navigates the rapidly evolving educational landscape.

Standing Strong in Mission and Values

"Now, more than ever, we at SOE heed the drum major calling of our mission, vision, values, and our community committed to eliminating oppression through the education ecosystem," affirms Interim Dean Rodney Hopson in his blog. "What a tall order in these times! Our ability to collaborate, connect, build, and leverage with others sharing our drum major instincts will be our lifeline during the days ahead."

While headlines across the nation highlight cuts to educational funding and programs, the School of Education maintains its focus on preparing future educators who can create positive change. Dean Hopson explains that SOE鈥檚 foundational principles guide our work.

"I have to think about supporting SOE鈥檚 critical mission in these changing times,upholding our mission because educating future teachers and leaders is always needed," says Hopson.

Resilience in Teacher Preparation Programs

The challenges facing educational institutions became personal for SOE when Dr. Carolyn Parker, associate dean for research, programs, and partnerships and director of graduate teacher education and academic programs, learned that a significant grant funding the Residency for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (RETL) program was initially terminated amid the ongoing federal policy changes.

"It's unthinkable and hurts me to my core," Parker told The Washington Post when discussing the initial termination of the five-year $1.8 million grant. "We have a teaching shortage we were helping address. Now what?"

The RETL program follows a medical residency model, placing teacher candidates in schools under the guidance of master teachers for an academic year. These supports have proven to be impactful in preparing new teachers while helping solve the teacher shortage. Being true to SOE鈥檚 mission, when funding was cut, 玉米视频 University ensured currently enrolled students could complete their education at no additional cost.

In a positive turn of events, Parker's grant was reinstated on March 24 when the US District Court issued a Preliminary Injunction against the Department of Education. While this development brought relief, Parker remains concerned about long-term sustainability.

"While I'm excited that the RETL project has recently been refunded, I'm concerned that continued support for this and similar initiatives may not be sustained," shares Parker. "Without this support, the teacher shortage could worsen鈥攗ltimately impacting all students, as research shows that having a qualified, well-prepared teacher is one of the most important factors in student achievement."

Students Taking Action

SOE's influence extends beyond the classroom as students apply their education to real-world advocacy. Ricardo Garcia, a Master in Education in Education Policy and Leadership student ('25), recently spoke at the Rally to Save DC Schools and Community Schools in response to funding cuts.

"Attending and speaking at the rally was crucial because my job, along with those of many other coordinators, is at risk if this funding is cut," Garcia explains. "More importantly, I see firsthand how these grants provide essential support for students and families, from mental health services to after-school programs and family resources."

Garcia's work exemplifies how SOE students put their education into practice by creating tangible support systems for communities in need. Through his position, he established a clothing closet for students, a newborn pantry for families with babies, and weekly fresh produce distribution for families facing food insecurity鈥攁ll resources at risk without continued funding.

Dr. Reuben Jacobson, director of the MEd program that Garcia is enrolled in, emphasizes the school's approach: "The Education Policy and Leadership Program prepares students to frame the challenges we face in education, equips them with the analytical skills to identify solutions, and assists them in exerting their leadership and power to create change."

Research and Scholarship That Advances Equity

Faculty at SOE continue to contribute valuable research and insights that promote educational equity. Professor Brian McGowan participated in a keynote panel at the Maryland Student Affairs Conference in February, addressing student affairs professionals, staff, and students.

I'm constantly thinking about heart work, and making sure everyone has access to opportunity and to have thriving experiences on our campuses."

McGowan, along with Dean Hopson, Master of Education candidate Morgan Leopold, and 玉米视频 University's Washington College of Law Professor Lia Epperson, co-authored an important article titled "" in the Journal of College and Character.

This timely, peer-reviewed article examines the evolving landscape of inclusivity in higher education amid increasing sociopolitical opposition. The authors affirm that efforts for "building just and supportive environments" are essential, and present research showing how cross-racial interactions enhance intellectual growth, critical thinking skills, and create a stronger sense of belonging for all students.

The article provides a historical context for educational work that supports inclusionin both practice and law while offering recommendations for advancing these principles, particularly for faculty who serve as change agents. It encourages educators to "teach beyond their subject expertise and to pursue professional development opportunities to focus on inclusive and culturally relevant pedagogical practices."

Additionally, the authors suggest ways to foster independent thinking. "Creating co-constructed environments where students can build community and learn from one another is another way to foster a sense of belonging " they note.

As SOE navigates the challenges presented by changing federal policies, the school maintains its commitment to preparing educators who can serve all students effectively.

Dean Hopson reinforces this commitment in his blog: "We are a school unwavering in our support and space as reflected in our mission, vision, and values that recognize the need for us to be catalysts in our universities, recognize the role of history in the formation of coalitions to address social and civic change, and aspire to prepare the next generation of educator and teacher preparation for the world that awaits them."
